Can the Enamel of Your Teeth Be Restored Once Lost?

Posted on 12/20/2019 by Brandon Cooley
Can the Enamel of Your Teeth Be Restored Once Lost?Throughout our lives, our teeth are constantly trapped between a tug of war. One side, harmful bacteria and on the other, our saliva trying to heal.

Harmful bacteria feed on food particles in the mouth, particularly sugar and starches. This leads to the eventual wearing down of the tooth's protective enamel. However, there is another challenge that's just as serious. It's called dental erosion.

Can The Tooth Enamel Be Restored, Again?

There is a wicked rumor that this or that toothpaste will revive the enamel. It is only a rumor. Once tooth enamel is damaged, it cannot ever be returned. However, weakened enamel can be restored to varying degrees by improving its mineral content. Even though we said toothpastes and mouthwashes can never return it to the teeth, they can contribute to this remineralization process.

This is when your minerals, especially the calcium, is returned to the teeth. The minerals bond to the surface and collect on the weak areas of the enamel. By allowing your mouth to remineralize, you have to keep it at a healthy pH. Your mouthwash, sugar-free gum, and water throughout the day can boost this time. Avoiding sugar and sugary sodas is also a must.

How to Stop Dental Erosion

There are two popular options for rebuilding tooth structure. There is a procedure called tooth bonding and there is another called a tooth crown. Tooth bonding is where we are attaching tooth-colored composite resin to chipped or cracked areas on the tooth surface. Tooth Crowns are when we replace the covering of a tooth with damaged enamel. This helps to protect it and strengthen the tooth all around.

Even the best care over the years, you can still fall victim to dental erosion. By maintaining annual checkups, we can be on the lookout for when it happens. Then be here to protect you.
