The Link Between Dry Mouth and Alcohol

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Brandon Cooley
The Link Between Dry Mouth and AlcoholFrom cracked lips to trouble swallowing, the effects of dry mouth are undoubtedly uncomfortable. Most people are aware that certain medications cause dry mouth, but they may not know about a factor that is completely within their control – alcohol consumption. If you've felt the effects of dry mouth after a big night out, you know exactly what we're referring to. In this article, we discuss how alcohol causes and worsens dry mouth.

Diuretic Effect

Because alcohol is a diuretic, it stimulates urine production. Every trip to the bathroom results in your body losing more water and can lead to dehydration. This doesn't just apply to binge drinking – even a few drinks can result in this.

Having water in between drinks can help but this doesn't completely ward off dry mouth. If you have dry mouth a couple of times a year, it isn't a major issue, but this is problematic if you suffer from chronic dry mouth.

Decreased Production of Saliva

Consuming alcohol doesn't just decrease the production of saliva in the short run – heavy drinkers will face long-term salivary production problems since frequent drinking changes the microbiome in people's mouths. This, in combination with the diuretic effect of alcohol can result in chronic dry mouth, i.e., xerostomia.

Dry mouth isn't just uncomfortable. From plaque buildup and tooth decay to gum disease, dry mouth can wreak havoc on oral health. If you're experiencing dry mouth, it is essential to make sure that this isn't affecting your teeth and gums. At Cooley Smiles, Dr. Aaron Cooley and Dr. Brandon Cooley can examine your teeth and gums to see whether your dry mouth is severe enough to result in oral damage. They can also give you tips on how to cope with dry mouth. Simply call (425) 998-6998 to schedule an appointment.
