Biofilm sounds like something that would be really good for your mouth. Anything with bio in it is supposed to be good for you, right? Not so fast. In this case, biofilm is decidedly not good for your teeth. If you're not sure why biofilm isn't a good idea, let us give you some information. What Is Biofilm?Biofilm is a thin layer of matter that can form on your teeth. When you run your tongue over your teeth, and you feel a bumpy layer, that is the biofilm on your teeth. Biofilm is made of many different things- bacteria, fungi, leftover food particles and even pieces of plastic or paper, depending on what you ate. While some of the “stuff” in biofilm is harmless, the appearance of bacteria is never good where your teeth are concerned. The Bad News About BiofilmBecause biofilm is caused by bacteria, it can cause real damage to your teeth. Biofilm can cause both tooth decay and gum disease. This can lead to cavities and tooth loss. It can also lead to bleeding gums, gingivitis, and inflammation in your mouth. Bacteria can even make you sick. The bacteria in biofilm can cause infections of the ear. It can also make diabetes worse. It can travel to your heart and cause heart disease as well. The less biofilm you have in your mouth, the better.
