Chipped teeth can happen to anyone. You may hit your mouth when playing sports, bite into a hard piece of candy, or suffer some other accident that damages your teeth. A chip isn't purely cosmetic, and it is important that we check out your tooth if you suffer from one. Left untreated, some chips can extend into bigger problems. Craze Lines Might Not Require TreatmentA craze line is a minor fracture of the tooth that simply affects the enamel. Most people don't experience pain, but you may notice a difference in the appearance of the tooth. Even without discomfort you should contact us, as most chips have sharp edges that could cut your tongue, lips, and the inside of your cheeks. Treatment can range from polishing the tooth, bonding, or the use of composite resin. Larger Chips May Lead to DecayA larger chip will provide an uneven surface area on your tooth. This gives plaque, bacteria, and food particles a place to accumulate, and they may be difficult to remove with a toothbrush. Unfortunately, this could lead to decay. Severe Chips May Require Major InterventionA severe break – or a small break that becomes severe without treatment – can be bad news for your oral health. The break may be so deep that the nerves of the tooth are exposed. Proper treatment could require a root canal and a crown. A split root could also occur, and this serious dental injury leads to infection and inflammation. These problems could potentially be avoided if you were to treat a small chip before the issue escalates. Have you chipped a tooth recently, or have you been living with a broken tooth for a while? Regardless of how long it has been since the damage was done, let us take a look. Give us a call today to set up your appointment. |
