Having Some Dentures and Some Original Teeth Provides Stability

Having Some Dentures and Some Original Teeth Provides StabilityOne challenge faced by many people who wear dentures is that of stability. Given that dentures are placed directly against the gum tissue, and given that the gum tissue is relatively smooth, keeping dentures in place can be a little bit frustrating, to say the least.

Many people who wear dentures use some form of adhesive to help hold them in place, but this presents its own challenges. What's more, adhesive paste, although better than nothing, does not always work as well as users might hope.

Fortunately, if you have a few original teeth left, this can be a real benefit when it comes to keeping your dentures in place. Here is some information to keep in mind if you are debating whether to have your few remaining original teeth extracted or not prior to getting dentures.

Dentures Can Fit Around Original Teeth

Dentures can be custom-fitted to perfectly match the contours of your mouth. This means that the dental laboratory can leave a spot where your original teeth go. This helps ensure a snug fit, and makes the overall process of installing the dentures, as the original teeth can act as guides to help glide the dentures into place.

Your Teeth Can Help Stabilize the Dentures

What's more, because your teeth are stable, they can help keep the dentures from moving around inside of your mouth. This is especially true if you have one or more teeth on both sides of the mouth. The remaining teeth can act as an anchor to keep the denture stable against your palate and gum tissue.

Because of these benefits, you should carefully consider whether you really want to have your remaining teeth extracted. Spend some time and talk with your dentist, considering the real benefits that you can gain from leaving at least a few of your remaining teeth in your mouth.
