Why Your Teeth Need Trimming Prior to Getting Veneers

Why Your Teeth Need Trimming Prior to Getting VeneersDental problems such as discolored, missing, fractured, and crooked teeth are common. However, despite this, having one of these problems can be embarrassing and a huge blow to your self-confidence during social interactions.

Fortunately, there are several treatment procedures that can allow you to get your smile back. One of these procedures is the dental veneer procedure.

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-shaped shells that are fitted to the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance. Made from materials that are colored like teeth (porcelain, resin, and porcelain laminates) these veneers can help to greatly improve the appearance of your teeth, allowing you to smile without being self-conscious.

Trimming of the Teeth Before a Dental Veneer Procedure

During a dental veneer procedure, your teeth will usually undergo some modification, which is usually in the form of trimming. There are a number of reasons as to why trimming is carried out. These include:

•  To create a uniform shape of your teeth. One of the reasons for dental veneer procedure is to improve the aesthetic appearance of your teeth. Therefore, if the surface of your teeth is not uniform, trimming them will help to even them out, which will guarantee a more pleasing appearance, and an easier time fitting the veneers.
•  To ensure that the thickness of your teeth remains roughly the same after the procedure. While dental veneers are thin, they will cause a considerable increase in the thickness of your teeth when they are attached. Trimming the front surface of the teeth (by roughly the same amount of thickness as the veneers) thus guarantees that your teeth remain the same after the procedure.
•  To remove any decaying parts of the teeth. A dental veneer procedure is permanent, and thus cannot be performed on your teeth if they are decaying. In this case, trimming will help to remove the decaying parts and provide a permanent solution to the problem.
•  To remove existing dental fillings and replace them with new ones. Dental veneers can be attached to teeth that have existing dental fillings. However, replacing them with new ones guarantees a better chance of the veneers forming a strong and secure bond with the surface of the teeth.

If you suffer from any dental problems that make you self-conscious during social interactions, a dental veneer procedure can offer a lasting solution. Get in touch with us today for more information on the procedure.
