What is Bite Disease?

Bite Disease Cooley Smiles WA 98006-1262Very few of the population know that there is a bite disease. Also known as an occlusal disease, the number of people who are suffering from this ailment are steadily rising. People with crooked teeth or small mouths also suffer from this ailment.

People with occlusal disease have difficulties with eating, with the placement of their teeth slowing and weakening the mouth's ability to chew. They also have trouble with gum bleeding and cavities. Tooth decay is also relatively faster for people with these kinds of problems.

In fact, people mistake their bite disease with temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ, and tried home remedies or just accepted their fate altogether. Bite disease is preventable and treatable, as long as you know what it is and what causes it.

How Do People Get Bite Disease?

Usually, this is due to the fact that these people have overbite problems during their childhood. Children who have the habit of sucking thumbs until late childhood or usage of a pacifier until they are 4 or 5 years old have higher chances of getting bite disease when they grow up.

However, some elderly patients with ages ranging from 55 to 65 also gained occlusal disease, due to the fact that fillings or crowns were improperly fitted. People who have encountered head trauma also get an occlusal disease, especially those who were in a vehicular accident.

Bite disease is totally preventable and even curable with the dentistry methods found today. For instance, children should stop sucking their thumbs or using a pacifier when they are of age, and an annual checkup with a dentist can detect early signs of bite disease.

Overcrowding of teeth can also lead to bite disease, and knowing which teeth should be extracted takes expertise. If you know someone who has problems with their dental health, then you can ask them to visit our clinic so that we can help.
