Does Flossing Really Improve Your Oral Health That Much?

Recent news and reports tend to undervalue and even discredit the value of flossing because they claim that scientific evidences that support the oral health benefits of flossing are lacking.

These reports are causing confusion considering that flossing has always been believed to be an essential part of good oral hygiene.

It is important to note, however, that just because there is not enough research to show the real oral health value of flossing does not automatically mean that this practice is ineffective. The American Dental Association (ADA) has always stressed that flossing or interdental cleaners are critical in taking care of one's teeth.

Benefits of Flossing

Flossing is essentially cleaning between teeth. This oral habit helps in disrupting and removing plaque build-up in hard to reach areas. Note that plaques can cause tooth decay and gum problems, which is why flossing generally helps you in preventing some oral health issues.

In a study conducted by the New York University College of Dentistry among twins, it was revealed that tooth and tongue brushing as well as flossing greatly reduced the number of microbial species that cause dental cavities and periodontal disease. The group of twins who regularly flossed suffer less from bleeding gum problems compared to the group of twins who did not floss.

Ultimately, flossing is one of your defenses against teeth and gum problems because it tends to help eliminate one of the root causes of oral problems - plaques. When you are able to control plaque build-up, you are less prone to the many types of gum disease including gingivitis as well as tooth decay.

It is important to remember, however, that flossing can only be effective if it is done properly. If you are flossing the wrong way, the act itself can bring you more harm than good.
