Benefits of Essential Oils when it comes to your Oral Health

Humans have made use of essential oils in complementary medicine for years. You can use them in rinses to combat bad breath; inhale them to relieve anxiety if you or your child suffer from a fear of visiting the dentist; and apply them to sore spots in the mouth to ease the pain and speed the healing process. Read on for a list of some of the most common essential oils and their uses in oral health.

Lavender Oil

If you have ever spritzed lavender water on your pillow to help you sleep, you know it has a great calming effect. Lavender oil has been shown to be effective for people experiencing mild anxiety, which is not uncommon before a trip to the dentist. Some dentists even use lavender oil in their waiting areas!

Mint Oils

Peppermint and spearmint oils taste great, which is why they are used in toothpastes and mouthwashes. Diluting one of these minty oils with water creates a mouth rinse which you can use to kill bacteria, combat bad breath and leave your mouth feeling fresh and clean. (Remember not to let children use any mouthwash without adult supervision.)

Tea Tree Oil

Essential oil enthusiasts will know that tea tree oil has many uses. This oil is great at killing germs and absorbs well into gum tissue: try it on cold sores or mouth ulcers.

Clove Oil

Dentists have been using clove oil for a very long time: besides the antiseptic properties it offers, this intense oil is a natural anesthetic. Many people all around the world use it to treat toothache.

While these fragrant substances can form a great part of your oral health routine, they are not suitable for everyone and cannot be used as a substitute for professional dental care or properly formulated toothpaste. Give us a call for more advice about including essential oils in your oral health routine.
