Is Your Smile Suffering from a Midlife Crisis?

A woman suffering from a sensitive tooth. As you age, your mouth will go through some significant transformations, and this is especially true of the 40 to 50-year-old time span.

During these years, you need to be on the lookout for some common dental health concerns that could indicate your smile is going through a midlife crisis.

Your Teeth Are Suddenly Much More Sensitive

Most of us experience occasional tooth sensitivity to some degree, but if your teeth are now much more sensitive and it never seems to subside, you might be living with a problem.

Issues like gum disease, tooth decay, enamel loss, fractures, and enamel erosion can be the causes of sensitivity, so this symptom is never something that you should ignore.

Your Mouth is Really Dry

One of the most common causes of dry mouth is medications that you might take for an age-related illness. Unfortunately, dry mouth can lead to some oral health complications, as you won't have an adequate amount of saliva to keep your mouth moist.

Saliva is used to rinse bacteria and acids off of your teeth before they have a chance to do any damage, and it is also crucial in bad breath prevention.

Your Teeth Are Falling Out

Despite what many people believe, tooth loss isn't a normal part of the aging process. Your teeth are supposed to last you for your entire life, but according to the American Dental Association, the average adult aged 20-64 has three missing teeth.

This is often the result of poor dental hygiene, but regardless of the reason, if your teeth are falling out you'll need to find a restoration. This could involve a bridge or a dental implant, or if your tooth loss is widespread, you might also be considering dentures.

Even as you age, it is crucial that you continue seeing your dentist regularly. With his help, you can detect signs of a dental midlife crisis before they get out of control.
