Drinking Strong Coffee Can Lead to Strong Teeth

Posted on 12/25/2015 by Brandon Cooley
A cup of strong hot coffee. When you think of beverages that you should be drinking in order to support your teeth, coffee probably isn't one of the first that you consider. After all, we've been told countless times that coffee can actually cause stains, so how could it be beneficial? The reality is that when it comes to tooth strength, strong, black coffee can be a great addition to your diet.

Strong Coffee Kills Bacteria

Research has recently shown that when drinking strong coffee with high caffeine content, you can actually destroy the bacteria found in your mouth that cause dental plaque. Similar to red wine, coffee contains polyphenols that will burst the bacteria. When this occurs, plaque that drives gum disease and tooth decay will become drastically reduced.

Tips to Keep in Mind
Remember that the positive effects of coffee will be counteracted when milk, cream, and sugar are added, so it is important to take your coffee black. Additionally, certain coffees known to belong to the robusta strain were also shown to be the most effective at breaking down plaque-causing bacteria, so you should consider switching to one of these Vietnamese or Brazilian coffee options.

Additionally, you should also remember that coffee does have an acidity level that can make it prone to staining the teeth. To deal with this potential problem, you can drink water immediately after having a cup to swish out your mouth. Coffee also contains a diuretic agent that could reduce the production of saliva, which is needed for good oral health, so drinking water after a cup of coffee can also help to combat this problem.

Do you have additional questions about how coffee or any other dietary staple could be affecting your oral health, or has it simply been a while since your last dental checkup?
