The Top 5 Reasons to Brush Your Tongue

Posted on 8/23/2015 by Brandon Cooley
A woman brushing her tongue to prevent bad breath. You brush your teeth every day, hopefully twice a day, and you floss at least once, so what is the big deal with brushing your tongue? Isn't brushing your teeth enough to get rid of the germs? While brushing your teeth is very important and should never be skipped, brushing your tongue is just as important because this large organ in your body can carry a large majority of the bacteria that is in your mouth!

If that is not reason enough, consider these reasons to brush your tongue.

1.  Stop bad breath by eliminating the germs that reside on your tongue and begin to smell.
2.  You will be able to taste your food with greater intensity. If you have bacteria build up on your tongue, your taste buds are eventually affected, making food taste just okay rather than great! Brushing your tongue regularly can help you enjoy your favorite foods with great intensity again.
3.  Make your overall oral health better. Brushing your teeth does get rid of many germs, but if the germs stay on your tongue, they will eventually spread onto your teeth, negating the effort you put forth in brushing your teeth.
4.  Decrease your risk of gum disease by eliminating the plaque that resides on your tongue.
5.  Prevent the spread of illness throughout your body. Your tongue is a gateway to the rest of your body via the bloodstream. Why leave germs there that can spread and make you ill?
