Close up of a beautiful smileFever blisters are a great way to name something that can be so painful, itchy, and crusty. While the term fever blister has been around for decades, the disease that causes fever blisters is centuries old. If you are plagued by fever blisters, here are some treatments for the troublesome irritants.

What Causes Fever Blisters?

The herpes simplex virus causes all fever blisters. You may think that the virus that causes herpes is only sexually transmitted, but the herpes simplex virus that causes fever blisters can be spread by any close contact. Herpes viruses are hundreds of millions of years old and have been found in humans for thousands of years.

What Do Fever Blisters Look Like?

Fever blisters look like a cluster of small blisters with red irritation. They can be found on your upper or lower lips, but one of the most common areas is the corner of your mouth. Fever blisters themselves can be painful until they break open and scab over.

Caring for Fever Blisters

If you suspect you have a fever blister, there are several things you can do. First, you can visit a doctor or our dentist to get a sure diagnosis for a fever blister. Second, you need to be sure you are not in close contact with someone else - in other words, refrain from kissing or sharing plates, glasses, utensils, or food until the blister and scab go away. You also need to find treatment for your fever blister. Although all fever blisters heal on their own, you can reduce the amount of time you will need to recover if you use over-the-counter or prescription medication.

To help you recover from a fever blister, practice good sleeping habits and reduce your stress levels. Use lip balm and protect your lips from the sun, extreme heat, or cold. Many people have triggers for their cold sores, such as spicy foods, so learn to recognize your triggers. Also, if you can keep your lips moist, you are promoting healing.
